Movie Crazy

Are you crazy about movies? No, I don’t mean Harold Lloyd comedy crazy Movie madness from 1932 about a young man with little or no acting ability who desperately tries to be in a movie. I mean, are you crazy about movies? I must admit that I am a lover of movies. So raise your hands all those who consider themselves movie freaks. Yes, that’s almost everyone. Why are we crazy about movies? Why do we live in a film-crazy society? Hey, what are movies anyway?

Movies are ideas and/or stories that are presented to the audience through emotions through sound and a series of seamless images. Thanks to Google search.

How popular are the movies? Well, the keyword “movies” boasts a staggering 1.1 billion and growing searches on Google’s search engine alone. And the keyword “movie trailers” garnered more than a whopping 127 million searches. Watching movie trailers online has become a popular past time for many people. I know my husband is one of them. He likes to watch his movie trailers.

This past year alone brought in an astounding worldwide box office of $29.2 billion for 2009 alone. Movies are watched and filmed all over the world. The language gap has been removed due to the addition of subtitles. Now we can all share a universal movie experience. In addition to being universal, films are made for everyone, young and old. Why can you even see generations on most Disney or children’s movies. There is something for everyone regardless of age.

We celebrate movies and we celebrate the stars in our movies. We bring them into our homes through celebrity TV shows like ET, ET Canada, Access Hollywood and TMZ to name a few. We grab supermarket tabloids like The National Enquirer and Star that read the latest celebrity gossip and stuff them into our trolleys when no one is looking.

We have Oscar parties like we do Superbowl parties and we even bet or at least post our opinion on who will win the Oscars, Golden Globes, MTV Awards, etc. There are also classic TV shows like ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous’ that we included the faithful snorting and aahing over the content as if it were a good wine. The show lasted more than 10 years (March 1984 – September 1995). What a run! What a concept! We actually have to mingle and drool over the extravagant homes, lifestyles and dream vacation spots of the stars. Today, you can watch similar shows like MTV’s ‘baby cots and VH1′An amazing life….’

If you’re more of a homebody, you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home to watch a movie. You can literally channel movies through regular cable TV or special movie channels like Thrill, The Movie Network, HBO, Movie Central, Showtime, Turner Classic Movies, etc. And that’s after you’ve clicked through the TV movies of the week, movies on your PVR or sent your kids to the video store to rent one of this week’s new releases. Oh, and not to mention you can buy movies at your physical video store down the street or even online at eBay or Amazon.

How to get golden tickets to these magnificent palaces? We buy cereal boxes and cut out cardboard coupons, use our air miles or exchange rewards points to turn cash into movie tickets. We’re filling out contest forms in hopes of being selected as one of the lucky few to attend preview screenings of our favorite movies before they even hit theaters. We also roll out red carpets around the world and cover celebrity interviews on our favorite daytime and nighttime shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, Oprah and Regis & Kelly.

What’s better than a movie experience? Nothing. We search for tickets, buy our favorite treats, pick up the latest Famous or Tribute magazine for a leisurely pre-movie read (while eating real buttered popcorn or a bag of licorice). The lights go out, the screen expands, and the image and sound arrive simultaneously. We expect movie previews while watching boring commercials and then there they are. Those big beautiful attractions come in all their glory. We whisper yes or no or give thumbs up to our friends sitting next to us for the next movie adventure we’re planning. Then, if we’re lucky, that is, the boys will be able to hear the sound of the THX sound effect reverberating through the theater. (Hey guys, you can hear it on YouTube or download it as a free mp3 or ringtone). Then the wait is over. Woof! And the adventure begins…

Again, why are we crazy about movies? Could it be because movies are cheap; cheap connection; or an economical family trip. Can the encounter be further enhanced through an Imax or 3-D experience. Or it goes deeper. An opportunity to escape from the real world even for a few hours. Movies evoke emotions whether it’s excitement, laughter, horror, sadness, inspiration, faith, love, etc. Maybe you’re on an unpredictable adventure, uncovering a mystery, or watching a family deal with a loss. The film takes us away; wherever we want to go. Even the theater itself is an experience, as we discovered. The lights, the sound, the feel, the big screen, the comfortable oversized fabric chairs, the handy cup holders, the popcorn and snacks from the snack stand, etc. The movie experience really touches all of our senses. Which movies have moved you emotionally lately?

Movies are one place where you can choose what you want to see and feel. If I want to be happy, I’ll go see a happy comedy. If I want to be thrilled, I’ll go see a thriller or a horror movie. And if I want to entertain my little niece and nephew, I’ll go see the latest animated movie, etc. There are other genres that fill the movie experience: action and adventure, crime and gangster, drama, epic/historical, musicals/dance, science fiction, war , documentaries, westerns, biopics, chick-flicks, detectives and mysteries, disasters, fantasy, film noir, men’s movies, melodramas/weepers, road movies, romance, sports, supernatural, etc.

Movies bring people together. They’re something you can talk about at the watering hole at your 9-5 job, chat among your friends on Facebook, or discuss on forums. We can talk about the worst movies we’ve seen or our favorite movies of all time. We can quiz each other on movie trivia, quotes and songs. We can read or write movie reviews, search for movie ratings, and buy books about movies. We can even get the latest Hollywood gossip delivered to our email inboxes or go online to browse blogs like Leonard Maltin’s Movie Crazy blog.

Is there any other benefit to movies other than the overall entertainment experience? Actually, there is. Many professional therapists use movies to help people in crisis. There is a therapeutic movement that uses—you guessed it—movies. It’s called kinotherapy. Cinema therapy is used because it is easily accessible (there are movie theaters in almost every city), and the theme of most films is familiar to everyone. It also improves the relationship between client and therapist. Who doesn’t want to talk about movies.

Other benefits include the release of emotions, for example when we laugh during comedy, our laughter releases stress, tension and/or pain. A tear that makes us cry releases pent-up/blocked emotions. How about movies that touch on relationships or parenting. These observations and/or lessons can bring us closer to people, make us analyze current situations/relationships, or make us realize that we have work to do.

And if there’s one last thing that cements our movie-crazy mentality, it’s our desire or longing to actually be in a movie and/or meet a movie star. Well, this is right in — you can do both. Have you heard of the term TV or film? extra? If you want to get a better bird’s eye view of the making of the movie and meet a movie star or two, sign up as an extra. You’ll get paid, you’ll be fed, you’ll be on set and maybe rub elbows with your favorite movie star.
